Did Grandpa Leave Millions in a Forgotten Bank Account? How to Find Your Family's 'Unclaimed Deposits' on RBI's New UDGAM Portal

Do you have an old bank account you haven't touched in years?
Or did your parents pass away without leaving a list of their investments?
You might be sitting on a goldmine.

According to the RBI, over ₹42,000 Crore is lying unclaimed in Indian banks.
Previously, finding this money was impossible. You had to visit every bank branch physically.
Now, the RBI has fully operationalized its centralized search engine called UDGAM. Here is how to use it to find your lost money.

Disclaimer: The portal helps you SEARCH. To CLAIM the money, you must physically visit the respective bank branch with KYC documents.

Did Grandpa Leave Millions in a Forgotten Bank Account?

1. What Is an "Unclaimed Deposit"?

If a Savings or Current account is not operated for 10 years, or if a Fixed Deposit (FD) matures and remains unclaimed for 10 years, the bank transfers this money to the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF).

The Good News:
Even though the money moved to RBI, it is still yours.
You can claim it back at any time, along with the accumulated interest.

2. Introducing UDGAM Portal

UDGAM stands for Unclaimed Deposits Gateway to Access inforMation.
It is a single website where you can search for accounts across practically all major banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, PNB, and 40+ others) simultaneously.

3. How to Search (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these steps to check if you or your family has lost money:

🔍 Search Process

  1. Register: Go to the official link udgam.rbi.org.in and register with your mobile number.
  2. Enter Name: Enter the name of the account holder (e.g., your grandfather's name) exactly as it might appear in bank records.
  3. Crucial Step (Inputs): To narrow down results, entering a PAN Card number is most effective. Alternatively, use Voter ID, Driving License, or Date of Birth.
  4. Select Banks: You can select "All Banks" to search the entire database at once.
  5. Result: If a match is found, it will show the Unique Reference Number (UDRN), Bank Name, and Branch Address. (Note: It will NOT show the account balance).

4. How to Claim the Money

The portal only tells you where the money is. To get it, you need to do some legwork.

  • For Self: Take the UDRN reference / screenshot from UDGAM, your current KYC (Aadhaar/PAN), and a request letter to the specific bank branch.
  • For Deceased Family: The process is stricter. You will need the Death Certificate and proof that you are the Legal Heir (Succession Certificate) or a registered Nominee.
  • Interest: The bank will pay you the principal plus the interest applicable to savings accounts for the unclaimed period.

5. Why You Should Check Today

Many people assume, "I only have ₹500 in that old account."
But with compound interest over 10 or 20 years, that small amount could have grown significantly.
More importantly, finding an old dormant account might reveal other linked assets like forgotten lockers or insurance policies attached to that account.

Don't Let Your Money Sleep

The government wants to give this money back.
Spend 10 minutes on the UDGAM portal this weekend. Search for your name, your parents, and your grandparents.
You might just find a forgotten treasure that pays for your next vacation.
