ATM Didn't Dispense Cash but Money Deducted? Don't Just Complain. Claim Your ₹100/Day Penalty

ATM Didn't Dispense Cash but Money Deducted?

It is a nightmare scenario. You are in a rush, you insert your debit card into an ATM, enter your PIN, and hear the machine whirring.

But the cash slot doesn't open. The screen goes blank. Then, your phone buzzes: "₹10,000 debited from your A/C."

You panic. You call the bank. They say, "Wait 7 working days." Stop! If they make you wait that long, they owe you money.

The T+5 Rule: RBI's Strict Mandate

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is very clear about "Failed ATM Transactions."

When money is deducted but cash is not dispensed, the bank MUST reverse the transaction and credit the money back to your account within 5 Calendar Days (T+5) from the date of the transaction.

Note: 'T' is the day of the transaction.

The Compensation: ₹100 Per Day

Here is the part banks don't tell you. If the reversal does NOT happen within 5 days, the bank is liable to pay you a penalty.

💰 Your Right to Compensation

  • Rule: For every day of delay beyond T+5 days, the bank must pay ₹100 per day to the customer.
  • Example: You tried to withdraw on the 1st. The money came back on the 10th. (4 days late beyond the 5-day limit).
  • Total Penalty: ₹100 x 4 days = ₹400 credit to your account.

This applies even if the ATM belonged to a different bank (White Label ATMs included).

Step-by-Step: How to Handle This

Do not leave the ATM booth without evidence.

  1. Keep the Slip: If the machine generated a transaction slip (even saying 'Error'), keep it.
  2. Check the Camera: Look at the CCTV camera and show your empty hands to prove you didn't take cash (a useful pro-tip for disputes).
  3. Log a Complaint Immediately: Call your bank's customer care or log a dispute on their app. Note down the Complaint Reference Number.

How to Claim the Penalty

Most banks will credit the principal amount (e.g., ₹10,000) but often "forget" to credit the penalty.

  • Check your statement carefully. If the refund took more than 5 days, write an email to the Nodal Officer of the bank.
  • Subject: "Claim for compensation for delayed resolution of failed ATM transaction - [Complaint No]."
  • Cite the RBI Circular (DPSS.CO.PD.No.629/02.01.014/2019-20). They will usually pay up immediately to avoid RBI scrutiny.
  • Last Resort: If they refuse, file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in).

Chief Editor’s Verdict

Technology fails, but you shouldn't pay for it.

If your money is stuck, mark the "5th day" on your calendar. If the money isn't back by then, congratulations—you are now earning ₹100 a day tax-free. Don't let the bank keep your compensation; claim it as your right.
